FAQ's:
1. My child came home talking about one of the larger instruments, but she is so small. Should I steer her toward a smaller instrument?
No. String instruments, unlike other instruments, are able to be sized to the child. I actually began playing at the age of 4 on a teeny, tiny
instrument. Experience has shown me that students will want to practice an instrument of which they like the sound. The store has an instrument the perfect size for you!
2. My child has never played any music before. Is this for him?
Yes! We start with the assumption that students have no prior knowledge in this area. If they do, they just move ahead faster.
3. My child is in 4th grade and hasn't played at all over the summer, but I've heard many have. Should he participate this year?
Yes! We assume that students have not practiced over the summer. If they did, hooray! If not, they are right on track.
4. I'm on the fence about whether my daughter can handle the responsibility of moving to third grade and playing an instrument. Should I wait until 4th grade to begin?
No, in most cases. I always say give it a shot and see how things go. We will all be monitoring the situation, but playing an instrument only takes 10 minutes of home practice a day! It usually ends up being harder for the students beginning later because they are trying to catch up to their peers who began an entire year before them. Since the vast majority of third graders participate in orchestra this is a great time to try it with her friends.
5. My daughter knows she wants to play a different instrument in fourth grade. Should she enroll in orchestra in third grade or just wait?
Play in orchestra this year. The experience will only help her be a stronger musician and learn many skills and techniques now.
6. Those string basses look big. Do I have to transport them to school on lesson days?
No. We have basses at school for your child to use at school. You only need to have one at home that stays there to be practiced. If there is a financial issue with renting a bass, please let me know. We may be able to find an instrument to loan you.
